Tree branches brought down by the weight of the ice
Sylvain Ryan

The staff at the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) communications centre handled almost 800 calls between 12:30 and 10:30 p.m. on January 4. About 500 of them required a response by firefighters in Greater Montréal. In the vast majority of cases, the problem was tree branches brought down by the weight of the ice.

All in all, over 24 hours on January 4, firefighters responded to more than 720 calls, including four minor fires, 37 cases involving walls in hazardous condition, 249 first-responder calls and all the other weather-related calls. Note that the SIM normally gets an average of 300 calls per day.

We want to salute the professionalism, devotion and excellent work by SIM employees every day, but especially on that day, given the difficult conditions they had to cope with and the large call volume. Our sincere congratulations!
