When fighting a fire, certain equipment must be shut off. After the fire, if your home is safe to enter and is not a total loss, you should take the following actions:

Electricity

Have your electricity checked and turned back on by a certified master electrician.

Natural gas

Contact Gaz Métro to have your natural gas turned back on.

Propane gas

Contact your distributor to have propane gas turned back on.

Heating

Have your heating system checked by a qualified technician before turning it back on.

Solid fuel-fired appliances

Have your solid fuel-fired appliance checked by a qualified technician before turning it back on.

Fire alarm system

Have your system checked by a qualified technician and be sure the building is being monitored in the days prior to the technician's visit.

Smoke alarm

Replace your devices. Municipal by-laws require you to have a working smoke alarm on all floors of a building at all times.

Carbon monoxide (CO) alarm

Replace your devices.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas. Because you cannot see, smell or taste it, carbon monoxide can affect you and your family members well before you realize it. Even low exposure to carbon monoxide can cause major health problems.

Automatic sprinklers

Have your sprinkler system checked by a qualified technician and be sure the building is being monitored in the days prior to the technician's visit.
