Raconte-moi… Haïti et Montréal

From January 13 to April 26 avril 2015

A documentary and an exhibition of the Centre d’histoire de Montréal (in French only)

After touring multiple cultural centres in Montreal neighbourhoods (the Maison culturelle et communautaire de Montréal-Nord, the Maison Pierre-Chartrand and the maison de la culture Rivière-des-Prairies), the exhibition ends its run at the Centre d’histoire de Montréal.

The exhibition combines photographs, paintings, art installations and a documentary that tell a story of adaptation and integration by Haitians, who arrive in Montreal soon after the earthquake of January 12, 2010. The original exposition has been augmented with new interviews and art that go beyond commemoration and help explore the challenges of integration.

As part of the Support for Integration, Liaison and Accompaniment project (SILA), the city and the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés Culturelles du Québec asked the CHM to create a cultural heritage project for Haitian refugees who fled to Montréal after the earthquake in January 2010 and their sponsors.

The artists who created original works of art for the exhibition are: Myrtelle Chéry, Clifford Jean-Félix, Léonel Jules, Geneviève Lahens (Iris), Jean Pierre Lookens et Ralph Maingrette, and photograph Radu Juster.

The documentary was presented in competition at the Vues d'Afrique 2013 Festival in the category Regards d'ici and at the Festival international du film Black de Montréal
