About the museum

The Centre d’histoire de Montréal has begun its transition: in 2022, it will become the MEM – Montrealers’ Memory Centre.

Located in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des spectacles on the corner of Saint Laurent and Sainte Catherine, the MEM will be an inclusive, innovative museum space as well as a welcoming public space. Citizens’ voices have the place of honour with their accounts of yesterday and today, revealing the identities and (hi)stories that define “montreality.”

The spaces at the MEM:

  • Permanent exhibitions
  • Temporary exhibitions
  • Citizens’ spaces
  • Public spaces
  • Boutique-café
  • Cabaret
  • Rental spaces

Activities at the MEM:

  • Educational and cultural programs
  • Co-creation workshops
  • Museum-school
  • Extramural activities
  • Encyclopedia of Montrealers

Mission

To highlight Montreal’s diverse identities and histories through authentic, inclusive human experiences in which citizens tell their stories and connect with each other.

Vision

The MEM will be a stimulating, essential actor in Montreal’s cultural ecosystem capable of bringing citizens together and contributing to their awareness of the diverse realities of the city – past and present – so that we can build a well-informed, actively-engaged community together.

Values

Human
Empathic and open to others, the MEM places input from citizens at the heart of its actions.

Inclusive
Promoting social cohesion and accessible to all, the MEM is sensitive to the diverse realities that co-exist in Montreal.

Rooted in the community
Through an approach of proximity, the MEM brings a wide range of Montreal actors together in the transmission of authentic local (hi)stories.

Daring
A motor for innovation, the MEM prioritizes originality in collaborative, interactive initiatives.

Agent of change
Aware of environmental issues, the MEM is working to achieve responsible, sustainable co-habitation with its surroundings.

Commitment

The MEM team takes the pulse of a multitude of passionate, committed citizens who make an essential contribution to a cultural project that reflects the diverse realities of Montreal.

“You are the memory of Montreal. Together, we’ll talk about you.”
