Creating a custom search results page

Using the Custom Search portlet, you can create unique search results pages to meet specific search requirements. For example, you can choose how many results are displayed per page and the style and layout of the results.

Note: The style and layout of search results are controlled by settings within the displaying portlet and not by settings in the search form portlet.

NoteYou must be the administrator, a page builder or have the appropriate privileges to edit the default settings of the Custom Search portlet.

To create a custom search results page:

  1. Navigate to the page that contains the Custom Search portlet and where your search results are to be displayed.

  2. Click Edit Page to switch to Edit mode.

  3. Click (Actions) beside the portlet.

  4. Click Edit Defaults.

Note: All the options for the Custom Search portlet are described in the online Help. Click to display context sensitive Help for a particular screen.

  5. Click the Results Display tab.

  6. For Where the search results should be displayed, select 'This Portlet'.

If you choose 'Default Search Results Page' or a 'Custom Search Results Page', click OK. To customize results on the page you selected, navigate to that page and edit options on the Results Display tab as described in steps 7 through 15 below.

Note: The default search results page is set at administrator level, see Setting up the search feature.

  7. Select whether to display a Bulk action link.

If a search includes more than one page group, the Bulk Action link is not displayed. Also, it is not displayed for the 'Shared Objects' page group.

  8. Select whether to display a Save search link with the search results.

If you choose to display a Save search link, you may specify your own link text.

  9. Select Results pagination to display Previous and Next icons so that users can view search results on a page-by-page basis.

If this option is not selected and the number of results returned exceeded the number allowed on each page, the user would not be able to access the next set of results.

  10. Specify the maximum number of results per page.

The default number of results displayed on a page (Hits per page) is set at administrator level, for details see Using the custom search portlet.

Note: If you have chosen to allow users to Set maximum number of results (Search Form tab of portlet submitting the search), users can override the value set here.

  11. If you want to display a search form below the search results so that users can easily modify the search criteria and re-submit a search, select Search form with submission criteria.

If the search results are to be displayed in a different portlet from the search form, customize the search forms of both portlets to display the same attributes. Otherwise, not all the attributes which are visible on the search form portlet may be visible below the results.

  12. To change the Style for items returned in search results, choose a new display style from the list.

This style does not affect the appearance of the result portlet itself or the page the portlet is on. It only affects the text rendering item results, i.e. the font style, size, color, etc.

  13. To change the attributes used to describe item search results, move them to the Displayed Attributes list.

The order of attributes in this list is the order in which they appear on the search results page.

  14. Select the order in which search results are displayed, e.g. by Author, Create Date, Display Name, etc.

If you have chosen to allow users to Order search results (Search Form tab of portlet submitting the search), the value specified here is ignored.

Note: If Oracle Text is enabled, the Order search results by option is not displayed.

  15. Click OK.

The custom search portlet is displayed. When you next perform a search, the results are displayed in format you have specified.
