Setting up Oracle Text searching

Oracle Text manages and retrieves text by indexing documents or textual content. Several techniques ensure accurate text searching, from full-text searching to document theme analysis. For more information, see the Oracle Text documentation.

Portal builds the Oracle Text indexes at the time of installation, so administrators only need to turn on Oracle Text searching. For information on dropping and creating an Oracle Text index, see the Oracle Portal Configuration Guide.

Oracle Text functionality is available only if you install and configure the Oracle Text component according to the instructions in the Configuration Guide.

You must be the portal administrator to set up Oracle Text searching.

To set up Oracle Text searching:

  1. Click Search Settings in the Services portlet.

By default, the Services portlet is on the Administer tab of the Portal home page.

Note: If you see the message, "Oracle Text is not installed", Oracle Text was not installed with the database and is not available for your page groups. Arrange with your database administrator to have Oracle Text installed.

  2. In the Oracle Text Properties section, select Enable Oracle Text Searching to make Oracle Text searching available in your page groups.

  3. Select Enable Themes And Gists to create a theme and gist for each item returned by the search.

Note: Themes and gists are not available for all languages.

  4. In the Highlight Text Color list, choose a color to highlight the search words in the HTML renditions of the items returned by the search.

  5. In the Highlight Text Style list, choose a style to apply to the search words in the HTML renditions of the items returned by the search.

  6. Enter a Base URL for all searchable items that have a URL attribute with a relative URL value.

The format for the base URL is: http://host:port/pls/dad

Note: If no value is specified, the relative URLs are not indexed and therefore any URL content that the relative URL points to, cannot be searched.

  7. Click OK.
