Paul-André Linteau

Officer
2020

Emeritus professor at the University of Québec at Montréal and one of Canada’s best-known Montréal historians, Paul-André Linteau is an integral part of historical knowledge of Montréal. His book, Maisonneuve, first published in 1981, bears eloquent witness, as does his most recent book A History of Montréal on the evolution of our metropolis.

A researcher, author, scientific advisor, teacher and popularizer, he has, over his 50-year career, trained a generation of professionals who today study and teach history or work with museums, heritage or archival services, contributing in their turn to evolving the knowledge of Montréal and its influence in the development of Québec and, more broadly, of Canada.

His discussions of urban history have also led to comparative analyses on the evolution of Montréal as compared to that of large cities such as Brussels and Barcelona, a new area of research of which he is the precursor. A model pedagogue historian, Paul-André Linteau has endowed Montréal with knowledge indispensable to a better understanding of its current issues.
