Bernard Descôteaux

An Officer of the Ordre national du Québec, Bernard Descôteaux has worked for more than 40 years at the newspaper Le Devoir, which he has managed for 17 years. Under his leadership, the newspaper recorded profits, maintained its circulation in a difficult market and distinguished itself as a thoughtful and analytical daily.

Except for an early stint with La Voix de l’Est, Bernard Descôteaux’s entire career has been spent at Le Devoir. He has occupied successive positions as reporter, columnist covering Montréal’s municipal politics, parliamentary correspondent in Québec City and Ottawa, news director, editor-in-chief and, finally, managing editor.

Bernard Descôteaux is chair of the boards of directors of the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal and the Centre d’études sur les médias. He has supported civic engagement through his involvement on the board of directors and think tank group Génération d’idées.

He has co-authored various collective works and a book on the Quebec elections of 1981. He is regularly invited to comment on debates, round tables and seminars on politics.
