Angèle Dubeau

Officer
2018

Through her talent, passion and virtuosity, Angèle Dubeau has succeeded in meeting the formidable challenge of making classical music known and loved by a wider audience. This exceptional artist, violinist and outstanding leader has sold the most albums in Canada of any classical musician.

Angèle Dubeau received her first award for violin at the age of 15 and a year later a Premier Prix in Chamber Music at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal (master’s degree in music). She then pursued studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City with Dorothy DeLay before perfecting her art with Stefan Gheorghiu in Romania from 1981 to 1984.

A proud ambassador of Montréal and the music from here, she has performed in the great concert halls of some 40 countries. Driven by a burning desire to innovate, she founded La Pietà in 1997, an all-female string ensemble with piano featuring some of Canada’s best musicians. Since its debut, the ensemble has performed on many prestigious stages and on television, acquiring a solid reputation for excellence. Known for their outstanding virtuosity, impeccable precision, rich interpretations and, above all, the contagious joy that enlivens their stage presence, Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà have criss-crossed the world for more than 20 years.

Convinced of the need to do more to make classical music better known, Angèle Dubeau became involved in programming and hosting television programs, gala concerts and weekly musical shows. Since 1995, she has served as artistic director and host of the Fête de la Musique de Tremblant, a music festival that attracts more than 35,000 music lovers annually.

If Angèle Dubeau is renowned for her outstanding ability to connect with her audience, she has also left her mark on many musicians for whom she is a role model and a veritable source of inspiration. Her talent and gift as a communicator have influenced an entire generation.

In addition to her outstanding contribution to the music world, since the start of her career Angèle Dubeau has supported a variety of charitable causes, including in the area of health and social services.

Numerous national and international awards are testimony to her extraordinary career. She was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 1996, and promoted to Officer in 2012. She was named a Chevalier of the Ordre national du Québec in 2004. In 1996, she was awarded the Prix Calixa-Lavallée from the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal, followed in 2015 by an honorary doctorate from Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and the Prix RIDEAU from the Réseau indépendant des diffuseurs d’événements artistiques unis in 2017. In addition to these honours, her albums have garnered rare success year after year.
