Changing the region type

Regions can be item regions, portlet regions, or undefined. You cannot add portlets to an item region, and you cannot add items to a portlet region. If you have Manage privileges on the page, you can add either portlets or items to an undefined region, after which the region becomes a portlet region or an item region, depending on what you added to it. You can change the type of a region only if the region is empty. You cannot change an item region to a portlet region if the region contains items, and vice versa. Likewise, you cannot make a region undefined if the region is not empty.

Other users (for example content contributors) cannot add content to an undefined region. Undefined regions appear with no edit controls in them. For content contributors to be able to add content to a region a user with Manage privileges on the page must first change the region type, or add content of a specific type to the region.

Regions can also contain tabs. Each tab can be divided into its own configuration of regions.

To change the region type, you must have at least one of the following privileges:

  5. Click OK to return to the page.
