Favorite groups enable you to organize your favorites in logical entities. For example, you might create a group called Newspapers that contains links to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and so on. The group might also contain subgroups called Michigan Publications and Libertarian Press, which contain favorites to URLs related to those themes.
In addition to favorite groups that users create themselves, you can create default favorite groups that display to all users of the Favorites portlet. Both the user created favorite groups and the default favorite groups display in the Favorites portlet.

Default favorites are displayed by default in the Favorites portlet.
