Guy Breton

Commander
2020

Over the course of his two terms as Rector of the University of Montréal, Guy Breton presided over its most important development project in nearly a century, raising it to one of the top institutions in the sciences: the Science Complex, inaugurated in 2019 and twinned with a major urban renewal project.

He also presided over the emergence of artificial intelligence research as a major strategic sector for the metropolis at the same time as he led the planning of care services, teaching and research for the new University of Montréal Health Centre, which was rising from the ground.

We also cannot fail to mention the role he played in consolidating the University as a world-class francophone institution, its ranking as one of the top 100 universities in the world, the University’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and the protection of Mount Royal. All this paints a portrait of a visionary rector, to whom Montréal is unquestionably indebted for being a stronger and prouder city..
