Gérard Plourde studied accounting at the École des hautes études commerciales (HEC Montréal). During his long career in industry, he was president and CEO (1951–70) and then chairman of the board (1970–86) of United Auto Parts.

Gérard Plourde made a major contribution to the economic and social development of his community in Montréal, both during his career as board member and by helping manage numerous philanthropic and cultural endeavours.

He sat on the boards of a number of charities, including the Fondation Lionel-Groulx from 1963 to 1968. Gérard Plourde was made a member of the Order of Merit of Université de Montréal’s alumni association in 1970.

Gérard Plourde died in 2004. He was inducted into the Academy of Great Montrealers in the Economic category in 1978 and was named a Commander of the Ordre de Montréal in 2016.
