Dr. Balfour M. Mount

Dr. Balfour M. Mount is a medical graduate of Queen’s University. He trained as a Urologist at McGill University and as a Surgical Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He was the Founding Director of the Royal Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Service in 1975, Palliative Care McGill in 1990 and the McGill Programs in Whole Person Care in 1999.

Dr. Balfour M. Mount is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at McGill University, where he held the Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Medicine (1995–2006). His research interests include issues relating to quality of life and whole person care. He is the author of 148 publications and he has participated in the production of 25 teaching films and audiotapes on oncology, palliative care, Viktor Frankl and Gustav Mahler. He has been a lecturer and Visiting Professor in North America, Great Britain, Norway, Netherlands, France, Austria, Italy, USSR, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China and Taiwan. He was the founder and Chairperson (1976–2004) of McGill’s biennial International Congresses on Care of the Terminally Ill.

He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, an Officer of the Ordre nationale du Québec and recipient of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine “Lifetime Achievement Award.” He has been honoured through the creation of three named awards: “The Balfour M. Mount Award” (The American Journal of Hospice Care), “The Balfour M. Mount Visiting Professorship in Palliative Medicine” (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada) and “The Balfour M. Mount Leadership Award in Hospice Palliative Care” (Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association).

He holds honorary degrees from Dalhousie University, Ottawa University, Queen’s University, McGill University and the University of Calgary. In 2008, he was honored by receiving the Herman Feifel Award for Exceptional Achievement in Thanatology, from the International Work Group on Dying, Death and Bereavement and by the opening of the Balfour M. Mount Palliative Care Unit at the McGill University Health Centre.

Dr. Balfour M. Mount was inducted into the Academy of Great Montrealers in the Scientific category in 2009 and was named a Commander of the Ordre de Montréal in 2016.
