André Caillé is a great builder, a skilled executive and one of the most respected leaders in the Quebec and Canadian environment and energy sectors.

André Caillé’s arrival at Gaz Métropolitain in 1982 marked the beginning of his career in the energy sector. Following an initial mandate as Vice-President of Corporate and Public Affairs, he was appointed Senior Vice-President of Administration and Public Affairs in 1983 and became Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer in 1985. Two years later, he was named President and Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until 1996, when he left to take over the helm at Hydro-Québec.

André Caillé completed his education at the Université de Montréal, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in specialized chemistry (1965), a master’s degree in physical chemistry (1966) and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry (1968).

He was a professor and coordinator at Quebec’s Institut national de la recherche scientifique until 1974. Subsequently, he was appointed Director of Quebec’s environmental protection services and served as Deputy Minister of the province’s environment department until 1981.

Quebecers will remember Andre Caillé as the man on the front lines during the 1998 Ice Storm. His accessibility and ability to unify, motivate and communicate earned him the admiration of his peers and citizens during the 28-day crisis that would go into the annals of Quebec history.

In 1998, André Caillé was inducted into the Order of Merit of the Association des diplômés de l’Université de Montréal in recognition of his role in enhancing the university’s influence and promoting social development. In 2000, the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal conferred its Medal of Merit for his support of scientific research, health and education and created a student scholarship in his name.

In 2000, the Institut national de la recherche scientifique awarded him an honorary doctorate. A year later, he received the Pierre-DeCelles Prize from the Institut d’administration publique de Québec.

Former Chairman of Noverco and former president of the board of governors of the Fédération québécoise pour le saumon atlantique, André Caillé also served on the boards of Hydro-Québec International, the World Energy Council, Enbridge and the Conference Board of Canada.

His work at Hydro-Québec did not prevent André Caillé from actively engaging in humanitarian causes and philanthropic endeavours in Quebec. He was responsible for industry fundraising in the Centraide 2002 campaign and has successfully done the same for, among others, the Université de Montréal, the Centre Marcel-De-La-Sablonnière and the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal.

André Caillé was inducted into the Academy of Great Montrealers in the Economic category in 2002 and was named a Commander of the Ordre de Montréal in 2016.
