Adding items by category/perspective to a page

To add items by category or perspective to a page, add a Custom Search portlet and then customize the portlet to search for the particular category or perspective required. If the Custom Search portlet is set up to perform an automatic query, all of the items belonging to the category/perspective selected are automatically displayed when the portlet is displayed.

NoteNormal security-checking is imposed. Therefore, only those items the user is authorized to see are displayed on the page, which may not include every item belonging to the category/perspective.

To place the custom search portlet on a page:

  1. Navigate to the page on which you want to add the portlet.

Note: If you do not see the page that you want to work with, you may not have the appropriate page access privileges. See your page group administrator to gain access.

  2. Click Edit Page to switch to Edit mode.

  3. Click in the region in which you want to add the portlet.

Note: If the region already includes items you can not add a portlet to the region.

  4. In the Portlet Repository, click Content.

  5. In the Available Portlets, click Custom Search.

This is the default location of the portlet. If it is not here, your portal administrator may have moved it to a different repository location.

  6. Click OK.

The custom search portlet is added to the page.

To customize the portlet to list items by category/perspective:

  1. Click (Actions) beside the portlet.

  2. Click Edit Defaults.

Note: All the options for the Custom Search portlet are described in the online Help. Click to display context sensitive Help for a particular screen.

  3. On the Portlet Type tab:

    1. To specify that this portlet is to execute a predefined query, select Automatically display search results.

    2. To cache the results from the automatic query, enter the length of time in minutes that the portlet content is cached. The default is 10 minutes.

Select Do not cache the search results to disable caching.

    3. Change the Portlet Header Title to the name of the category/perspective to be searched, if desired. For example, it might make more sense to name the portlet Sales Items, rather than Custom Search.

  4. Click the What to Search tab to choose which page groups and content type to search:

    1. For What type of content should be searched?, choose whether to search for items, pages, categories, perspectives or any of these.

    2. For Which page groups should be searched?, choose all, or select a subset of page groups.

For more information see Restricting portal content from a custom search.

  5. Click the Search Criteria tab to define a set of conditions for your search:

    1. Click Choose Attributes.

    2. Move Category or Perspective to the Selected Attributes box and click OK.

    3. Set the Category or Perspective Value equal to the appropriate value for your search.

  6. Click the Results Display tab to define how the results are displayed:

    1. Under Where should the search results be displayed?, select This Portlet to display results in the same portlet.

    2. Under Which options should appear with the search results?, check Results Pagination.

    3. Under Displayed Attributes, select the required attributes to be displayed for each item, or accept the defaults.

    4. For Order search results by, choose the order in which the results are displayed.

This option is only valid if Oracle Text is not enabled.

  7. Click OK.

When this custom search portlet is displayed, it executes the search query you have specified and automatically displays items and/or pages for the category/perspective you have chosen.
