Snow clearance operations in LaSalle

23 décembre 2008

LaSalle, December 23, 2008 - Winter has barely begun and already, the metropolitan region has been hit with major snowfalls. Snow clearance crews in LaSalle have worked relentlessly to make the municipality's 190 km of sidewalks and roadways safe and to remove, in time, the many centimetres of snow that fell on December 9, 17 and 21.

When the snow falls…
The borough gets its operations under way as soon as the snow starts falling.

  • With a snowfall of less than 5 cm: A mixture of ice melter and abrasives, made up of salt and crushed stone, is spread—by machine—on the roads and sidewalks.
  • Between 5 and 12 cm: The snow is cleared to the side of the streets. All throughout the snowfall, 8 snowplows and 15 snow graders move into action for this operation. Sidewalk cleaners clear the sidewalks and spread a mixture of salt and small crushed stones.
  • Over 12 cm of snow: The borough launches a snow removal operation that can last from two to six days, depending on the amount of the snowfall. The 70 or so workers, divided into 10 crews, get to work with snowblowers, snowplows, snow graders and sidewalk cleaners.

The holiday period
During the holiday period, LaSalle's snow clearance crews are at work if snow covers LaSalle territory. Since January 1, just like December 25, is a statutory holiday, no snow removal operations will be carried out; however, the streets will be cleared in order to make road traffic safe in case more snow falls.

Winter parking restrictions
The borough wishes to remind you that alternate parking is still in force on LaSalle streets. This means that every day, you are allowed to park on a different side of the street. Depending on the circumstances, this restriction may be lifted. To find out, you must phone the number marked on the signs along your street. If you don't want to phone the number marked on the signs, then just park your vehicle on the side where parking is allowed. Don't forget that alternate parking also includes Saturdays. Read the signs carefully.
