The holidays are a time of celebration with family and friends. Your home will be decorated with a tree, lights and candles. However, there are a few rules to follow to make sure your holidays are safe. Here are a few safety tips :

Christmas tree

  • Put your Christmas tree in a place well away from heat sources (baseboard heaters, fireplaces and other types of heaters).
  • Turn off your Christmas tree lights when you go to bed at night and when you leave the house.

Emergency exits

  • Make sure that all emergency exits in your home are visible, accessible and cleared of snow.

Candles

  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets, in a place where they will not fall over.
  • Put out all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

Wood- or propane-fueled appliances

  • Make sure the area around your appliance is clear at all times.
  • Remember that your wood-burning appliance is not an incinerator.

Smoke detector

  • Make sure your smoke detector is properly installed and in good working order.
  • Get a smoke detector that is powered by a non-removable lithium battery with a lifespan of 10 years.

Holiday cooking

  • When you cook, never leave your oven unattended.
