Background on the approach

Developed with the collaboration of more than 180 organizations from all walks of Montréal society, the Community Sustainable Development Plan 2010-2015 is a continuation of Montréal’s First Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development [PDF - 2.44 MB - 120 pages] (in French only), which covered the period from 2005 to 2009.

The Plan was charted on the basis of the knowledge acquired through the previous initiative, i.e., a collaborative approach led by the city and concrete measures implemented by the municipal administration and committed partners. Its development mobilized a number of city departments, local administrations and partner organizations, which worked together on different committees. Its content is the result of that ongoing dialogue.

The commitment to adopt the first strategic plan for sustainable development grew out of the Montréal summit held in June 2002. Several organizations that felt strongly about the city’s sustainable development emphasized their determination to work with the municipal administration by signing the Déclaration de principe de la collectivité montréalaise en matière de développement durable (Statement of principle of the Montréal community on sustainable development) [333 KB - 1 page] (In French only) and making a commitment, as partners, to implement specific actions. Montréal’s First Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development, adopted on April 20, 2005 by the city’s executive committee, spanned a period of five years.
