Citations and consultations
Protection of cultural property contributes to an area’s distinctive characteristics and presents a public interest. It was in this spirit that the Cultural Property Act, which gave the government of Québec complete authority in this regard, was amended in 1986 to give municipalities the power to protect cultural property within their jurisdiction.
Under chapter IV of this law, Montréal has two statutes for cultural property with a heritage value: the citation of buildings as historical monuments and the establishment of heritage sites.
A cited historical monument is:
- A site on which cultural property is located and whose architectural landscape presents an aesthetic or historical interest.
A heritage site is:
- A site on which cultural property is located and whose architectural landscape presents an aesthetic or historical interest.
Making a request to the city
Any resident or organization can make a request for citation or heritage site designation. The city’s Service de la mise en valeur du territoire et du patrimoine is in charge of evaluating requests. A form must be completed for each request.
