The urban agglomeration of Montréal announces that the state of emergency declared this past April 26th due to the floods caused by the spring freshet ends today. However, in order to continue efforts deployed in flooded areas, the urban agglomeration will continue its mobilization and the implementation of its emergency response plan, by returning to the Response 2 level. The mayor of Montréal, Valérie Plante, announces this decision upon analysis of the various flooding parameters.
“Lower water flows and levels have been recorded. Despite the expected rainfall over the next few days, no major rise in water levels is expected. Pursuant to our analysis of various flooding parameters, a renewal of the state of emergency is no longer deemed necessary for the urban agglomeration of Montréal. However, the agglomeration will remain vigilant and our actions and mobilization will be maintained across the territory,” stated Mayor Plante.
“Given the slow but steady decrease in water levels, as well as the integrity of the dikes that were erected, it is unlikely that new areas of the urban agglomeration will be affected by the floods. All dikes erected across the territory of the urban agglomeration of Montréal have been solidified. We are reassured with respect to their integrity and their capacity to keep water away until water levels return to normal in flooded areas,” said Bruno Lachance, director of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal and public protection coordinator.
Moreover, the urban agglomeration of Montréal will maintain its emergency response plan, at a Response 2 level, until it will deem it safe to withdraw the means of protection it has put in place. Employees of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) and of its public protection center, as well as of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), along with municipal personnel, will remain active at flood sites, namely to help citizens and rigorously inspect dikes, pumps, and other equipment.
The urban agglomeration of Montréal would like to highlight the incredible solidarity that has marked this situation and to remind all citizens that it continues to serve them. The urban agglomeration of Montréal also wishes to reiterate the fact that its employees are present on site and continue to monitor the situation as it evolves.
