The Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) continues to go green with a new fleet of 24 electric vehicles and a brigade of prevention officers on bikes.

This initiative, which is still at the pilot project stage, is part of the SIM’s desire to speed up its ecological transitions while facilitating travel around downtown Montréal for prevention officers.

More specifically, the bike brigade will be inspecting buildings to ensure they are safe and compliant with regulations. Bikes are an ideal way to meet residents and educate them about safety issues and fire prevention. The officers’ bikes are equipped with transportation racks and bags in which they can carry smoke detectors and educational materials.

The pilot project, which was implemented in 2019, will be used to evaluate the possibility of extending the service into other parts of the city next summer.

To date, officers have shown much interest and greatly appreciate these high-quality bikes and how quickly they can travel around downtown streets with them. What’s more, having closer contact with residents as they travel gives them more opportunities for informal discussions.

The SIM is proud to be actively involved in Montréal’s ecological transition!
