A rainlike display of fireworks

The following safety requirements apply to any use of fireworks reserved for certified fireworks handlers to produce visual and audio effects during a special event:

  1. Any pyrotechnician handling fireworks must have the appropriate certifications for the planned display and must be present on the display site during set-up, lighting and disassembly.
  2. Ensure compliance with all the safety recommendations outlined in the Pyrotechnics Special Effects Manual prepared by the Explosives Regulatory Division (ERD).
  3. Only ERD-approved fireworks may be used. Position the fireworks as per the submitted and authorized plan.
  4. Spectators must be at least 5 m away from the fireworks or as per the distance requirements stipulated in the Pyrotechnics Special Effects Manual.
  5. Artists must respect the distances stipulated in the Pyrotechnics Special Effects Manual and must be informed of all inherent risks and safety precautions.
  6. The pyrotechnician is responsible for terminating the performance or the use of a firework during the event should an unexpected danger occur regarding the fireworks, the audience, the artists, the technicians or any surrounding elements.
  7. Solidly attach the mortars or the fireworks and protect the cords firing.
  8. The fireworks must be lit using a control unit with a two-step locking system designed to prevent accidental lighting.
  9. No fireworks may fly or explode over the audience or be directed toward the audience.
  10. When fireworks are deployed inside a building, the fire safety and ventilation installations must not be affected.
  11. When explosive fireworks (bomb sound effect) are used, establish a minimum safety area of at least 8 m between the fireworks, the artist and the spectators. Install a visual warning system in the area of the explosive fireworks (in the wings, backstage, etc.) to ensure they are not ignited.
  12. The maximum quantity of fireworks powder must be made in accordance with the Pyrotechnics Special Effects Manual in effect.
  13. The fireworks must be stored in an appropriate, well-identified container or placed in a room set aside for that purpose.
  14. Keep at least two approved minimum class 3A-60BC portable fire extinguishers on each side of the fireworks.
  15. The combustible decorations located near the fireworks must comply with CAN/ULC-S109-03, "Standard for Flame Tests of Flame-Resistant Fabrics and Films" or NFPA 705-2009, "Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame-Resistant Textiles and Films."
  16. Send the SIM a written report of any event that occurs on the site during set-up or deployment or during any other stage of the activity.
