The East community centre becomes the Gerry-Robertson community centre
January 17, 2019
Pierrefonds-Roxboro, January 17, 2019 - Borough Mayor Dimitrios (Jim) Beis is pleased to announce that, at the suggestion of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro council, the Ville de Montréal and the Commission de toponymie du Québec have agreed to rename the East Community Centre, the Gerry-Robertson Community Centre, in memory of the former recreation director of Pierrefonds, who died in 2015.
"It was with great joy that we learned that our proposal to rename the East Community Centre on behalf of our colleague and friend, Gerry Robertson, had been accepted. Thus, in the spring, we will have a ceremony at the community centre for the official appointment of the building that will become the Gerry-Robertson Community Centre," said Borough Mayor Dimitrios (Jim) Beis.
The mayor adds: "Gerry was a colleague in recreation and a mentor at the beginning of my career. I am very honoured to be able to pay him this tribute. He was Pierrefonds' recreation director from 1973 to 2010, the year he retired.''
A very dedicated person
Mr. Robertson has been a pillar in the Pierrefonds community. In addition to his dedication to the well-being of the residents of the former city and the borough, he was, in turn, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CLSC Pierrefonds for several years, a director in the West Island health network and he was the Director General of the Table de quartier du Nord-Ouest when he passed away.
He has been an immeasurable support to the sports, community and cultural associations of Pierrefonds. Thousands of volunteers were able to count on himin the organization of their respective activities.
A team player, he has been a leader in the field of recreation with his colleagues in the West Island cities, including Mayor Beis, who has worked in recreation for over 25 years in Roxboro and Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
The choice of building
The East Community Centre was chosen because not only was Mr. Robertson part of the process of analyzing the needs of the sector and building this centre for eastern organizations and citizens, but also because at the end of his career, Mr. Robertson's offices and his social development team were located there. He worked very closely with the aid agencies in the eastern sector, which had previously been poorly served by adequate municipal facilities.
The community centre in the east was built in 2008. It is located on boulevard Gouin Ouest, across the street from the Sunnybrooke train station.
