À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market
The Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is proud to announce the creation and opening of the À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market, an innovative public market model, based on community and citizens’ mobilization, to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables at a fair price for the residents of the neighbourhood. The À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market is also a place for exchanges and meetings aiming to promote a dynamic, inclusive, participatory and supportive neighbourhood life. The À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market will be held every Friday, from July 5 to September 27, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., outside the Gerry Robertson Community Centre (9665, boulevard Gouin Ouest).
À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market: Pay what you can!
Offering only fresh and mostly local fruits and vegetables, the À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market will be operated by local non-profit organizations, namely Vert Cité (Éco-Quartier) and Corbeille de Pain organizations. The concept aims to offer a fair price for the products, by balancing the amount offered to the farmer, the amount needed for market logistics and the selling price offered to consumers. Thus, this market will operate under the principle of "Pay what you can". In doing so, a suggested price will be posted for each item and the citizen will be able to choose to pay the amount he or she is able to pay.
This initiative also aims to make fresh fruits and vegetables more accessible and available in an area geographically remote from food businesses, and to reduce food waste by recovering downgraded or unsold fruits and vegetables that will be reused by Corbeille de pain to make jams, pestos, etc., which will be sold at the Market. Eventually, small dishes prepared during cooking workshops in collaboration with the organization Corbeille de pain and with citizens, will also be sold at affordable prices for people in socio-economic precariousness.
The À-Ma-Baie Solidarity Market is also a place for exchanges and meetings aiming to promote a dynamic, inclusive, participatory and supportive neighbourhood life. Each week, local artists will offer musical performances to animate the public space and community organizations will be present to develop closer relationships with residents of the borough.
