The borough’s inspectors oversee the application of the By-law (in French) concerning the sanitation, maintenance and safety of dwelling units.

When an inspection request is filed with the Permits and inspections division (Division des permis et inspections), an inspector is dispatched to the premises in order to ensure the compliance and safety of the building. For example, an inspector may be called in the event of heating system breakdown in a building, or where there is a dangerous wall or a sanitation problem. If the inspector determines that the situation poses a problem, the division will notify the owner (or occupant, where he or she is in breach of the by-law) that he or she must carry out the work required within a prescribed time period.

Effective since February 22, 2012, when work required by the Permits and inspections division is not completed within the prescribed period, the owner or occupant (where applicable) will be billed for all inspection fees ($125) and any subsequent notices ($125).
