Green Laneways Program

In April 2013, the Borough of Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce established a green laneways program to counter the phenomenon of urban heat islands. This initiative is being undertaken consequent to the local Sustainable Development Plan 2012-2015 and is intended to make expertise available, provide financial support and accompany residents in their efforts to green their local environment.

Whether it involves planting trees, fruit-bearing shrubs or climbing vines, placing flower boxes or laying out planting beds, citizens are invited to submit a green laneway project to their éco-quartier. Among the various steps in the process, it should be noted that creation of a laneway committee comprising at least three residents living along the laneway is essential to ensure that the project is taken in hand and to assure its viability.

The Borough has mandated the éco-quartier de Côte-des-Neiges and the éco-quartier of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce to accompany the laneway committee and assure followup on the greening projects.
