History

When the Montréal Summit was held in 2002, women’s groups and citizens from all walks of life were actively involved in bringing to awareness their expectations and demands regarding the status of women in Montréal. The women’s delegation submitted important recommendations which were taken into consideration by the municipal administration and the citizens attending the Summit.

Among these recommendations was the proposal to implement an advisory board:  the city council, during its April 26, 2004 meeting, adopted the resolution that created the Conseil des Montréalaises, and nominated its first 15 members in September 2004.

In order to reflect the city’s diversity, these members come from various cultural and social segments of Montréal. By creating the Conseil des Montréalaises, the city of Montréal set an important milestone in its actions towards the female population, and the entire community. In 2009, the adoption of Bill 45 entrenched the Conseil des Montréalaises within Montréal’s city charter, ensuring its sustainability.

From the very beginning, the Conseil des Montréalaises has been involved in numerous case files and is pursuing its work in response to requests from Montréal women. The CM reports annually to the municipal council and to women’s groups.
