Status of the Metropolis
Recognition of the Status of the Metropolis
After repeated requests from Montréal, Québec City and the Union des municipalités du Québec, the government of Québec announced, in spring 2014, its intention to significantly transform the relationships between Québec and its municipalities.
Since then, the city has undertaken a process to adopt a new law to recognize its status as Québec's metropolis and give it the powers, responsibilities and funding sources that enable it to fully assume its role as a 21st century metropolis.
As part of the 2016-2019 partnership agreement that was recently concluded with the municipal sphere, the government of Québec has committed to recognizing special status for Montréal and Québec City in draft legislation that will be submitted in the spring 2016 legislative session.
