Multi-service help centre open for flood victims at the Pierrefonds Cultural Centre 13850, boulevard Gouin Ouest

Pierrefonds-Roxboro, April 19, 2019 - The Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro would like to inform residents facing floods that they can go to the Multi-Service Flood Assistance Centre, located at the Pierrefonds Cultural Centre, 13850, boulevard Gouin Ouest in Pierrefonds. For the time being and until further notice, the centre is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. As the situation evolves, the hours will be extended. At this centre, teams of Red Cross volunteers and staff of the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) welcome flood victims.

"I would like to reiterate that our priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens, to direct them properly, especially to our assistance centre, where Red Cross volunteers and CIUSS staff will take care of them and answer their questions," declared Borough Mayor Dimitrios (Jim) Beis.

We remind citizens that it is the responsibility of residents to protect their property, and to protect themselves in the event of flooding. For assistance, call on family members, neighbours or friends. With the state of the situation of the rivière des Prairies and the Intervention Mode 1 activated in the Montreal Emergency Plan, it is time to act now.

A video on how to caulk basement windows and build sandbag dikes in front of the house's doors and basement windows is available on YouTube and on the website. Sandbags should not be used to surround the house, but to prevent infiltration.

What to do in case of flooding

The Borough also reminds the population of the precautions to take in the event of a flood:

  • Keep yourself informed of the situation.
  • Follow the instructions of the emergency responders.
  • Leave your home if the water level requires it or if the authorities ask you to.
  • Bring your survival kit, warm clothing and raincoats, as well as the identity papers of all occupants.
  • Avoid driving in a flooded area.
  • Be careful when using gas or propane pumps.
