Rights and responsibilities

The Ville de Montréal official Web site -- -- hereinafter called “the site,” whatever its textual or visual content, is the exclusive property of the city and is in the public domain.

Any claim regarding the site and the elements it contains or that result from its use is governed by the laws applicable to the province of Québec, and any legal proceedings related to the site must be brought in the judicial district of Montréal.


The city uses security systems to protect its servers against the loss of data, improper use and the change of content and services by unauthorized third parties. These security systems are placed under the control of the administrators of the site.


Except for data on the city's Open Data Portal (in French) which are subject to the city's open data license (in French), the display, downloading, reproduction of elements (text and images) of the site oare authorized provided that they are for non-commercial purposes, that the elements of the site are not changed, and that the user retains all the intellectual property notices it contains during one or other of these operations.

The trademarks and logos used or displayed on the site are trademarks registered or non-registered by the city or by third parties. It is prohibited to use a trademark or logo reproduced on the site without the prior written authorization of its owner.

Material sent by users

The site does not recognize users’ property rights to any information, datum or non-encoded opinion (hereinafter called “material”) that might be sent to it in any manner whatsoever.

As a user, you acknowledge that the city has the irrevocable right to use, reproduce, display, produce, modify, transmit and disseminate the material received on its site gratuitously. You further agree that the city is free to exploit, gratuitously, the ideas, concepts, know-how or techniques related to this material.

This site may contain other notices of exclusive ownership and information on intellectual property rights whose conditions must be respected by every Internet user.

Links to other sites

This site contains hyperlinks enabling Internet users to visit other Web sites, hereinafter called “other sites.” The city makes no declaration as to the ownership, copyright, trademarks, confidentiality or any other right with respect to other sites, which it is the user’s responsibility to verify and observe.

The city’s site is completely independent of these other sites; it exercises no control over them, and consequently, assumes no responsibility as to their content, their policy on the protection of personal information, or the use to which they may be put by users of its site.

It is Internet users’ responsibility to take the necessary precautions to ensure that the sites selected have no viruses, worms, Trojan horses or other parasites of a destructive nature.

Modifications and limit of liability

The site may contain erroneous data or typing errors in spite of all the efforts exerted by the city to avoid them. The city declines all responsibility related to any error that may be found on the site.

The city may change the information regarding the products, services or programs described on its site without prior notice.

Access to this site, or the inability to access it for any reason whatsoever represents, for the user, the surrender of any recourse that he/she might exercise against the city for any damage related directly or indirectly to use of the site or the inability to access it, including loss of profits, the interruption of business activities or the loss of a program or data in his/her computer systems.

Extract of the city charter
R.S.Q., chapter C-11.4

No person shall, without the city's authorization, use in any way

  1. the name of the city, of a borough, of a municipal service or of a mandatary body of the city or a name likely to be confused with that name, its crest, seal, flag, coat of arms or graphic symbol; or
  2. the name of the Communauté urbaine de Montréal or of a municipality referred to in section 5 of this Act, of any of its departments or any of its mandatary bodies, or a name likely to be confused with that name, its crest, seal, flag, coat of arms or graphic symbol.

Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $1,000 if the offender is a natural person and $2,000 if the offender is a legal person. For a subsequent offence, those maximum fines may be doubled.
