Municipal organization of the island of Montréal
On January 1, 2006, Montréal underwent an important change: The new municipal structure became reality.
The city is now made up of 19 boroughs and continues to offer services throughout the territory of the island of Montréal, including the 15 reconstituted cities.
- Agglomeration council
The agglomeration council, a new political body made up of elected officials from Montréal and the 15 reconstituted cities, oversees shared services for the entire population of the island of Montréal, such as the police, the fire department, production of drinking water, wastewater treatment, road system management and the municipal court.

All taxpayers on the island of Montréal, no matter which reconstituted city or borough they live in, pay a common tax for shared services that are under the authority of the agglomeration council.
The chart below presents the city's three political bodies and their jurisdictions. It also illustrates the fact that the agglomeration council, like the city council and the borough councils, is one of the city's political entities. The agglomeration council is not a supramunicipal body.
