Security and Confidentiality
Security of city computer systems
The city's server is protected by a firewall which controls access to information that the city must keep confidential. This server is also equipped with a security certificate attesting to the confidentiality of all data that is transmitted to it.
Information that you transmit directly on line is processed confidentiality. Ville de Montréal manages the use of personal information pursuant to standards set forth in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (S.C. 2000, c. 5) and the Act respecting Access to Documents held by Public Bodies and the Protection of Personal Information (R.S.Q., c. A-2.1).
Cookies must be enabled in your browser before you can use Pay Online! A cookie is a sequence of data transmitted by a Web site to your browser that resides temporarily on your computer's hard drive. These cookies are benign and become non-functional once you leave our site.
The inclusion of an "s" (https, rather than just http) in the URL appearing in your browser's address bar means that a site is secure.
All of the information that you transmit to Pay Online! is encrypted at 128 bits. Such information includes your name, data pertaining to your driving record or vehicle ownership and your credit card information.
Your browser must be equipped for 128-bit encryption, which is the case with Microsoft Explorer 5.x and higher and Netscape 6.x and higher. You may download a more recent version if necessary from your browser's Web site.
Please note that the financial institution, rather than the city, administers our online payment solution. When you provide your credit card number, you are no longer connected to Ville de Montréal's server, but to that of the financial institution.
Only Visa and MasterCard are accepted. The city notifies the financial institution of the amount due, while you transmit your credit card information to the financial institution. The financial institution will generate an authorization number once you have finished entering your information. That number will appear on your payment confirmation page.
Using the system
City departments transmit their ticket issuance information to the Court. This process could result in some delay before a ticket is entered into Pay Online! If you decide to pay a ticket before it has been entered, you are doing so in full security. You will receive a payment confirmation at the conclusion of the transaction.
By paying online, you are entering a guilty plea to the offence with which you have been charged and a guilty verdict is rendered. Should you subsequently desire to change your plea, you must file an appeal with the Superior Court. Furthermore, any demerit points appearing on a ticket issued by a police officer will be automatically added to your driving record.
Prior to making payment, please make sure to comply with the following rules:
- The person whose name appears on the ticket must be the party using the system in the case of Highway Safety Code offences.
- The vehicle owner must be the party using the system in the case of parking offences.
- Take care to enter the right ticket number.
- Be certain the proper vehicle is indicated on the ticket.
- Make sure to enter the fine correctly if your ticket does not yet appear in the system.
