A common commitment
Now that we have reached the 21st century, it is more important than ever for our communities to be free of racism and discrimination. Montrealers can help to make this humanitarian ideal a reality by signing this commitment and resolving to adhere to the actions set out therein. By doing so, they will build on a series of public actions taken by the city, which are as follows:
- Adoption of the Montréal Declaration against Racial Discrimination on March 21, 1989, a historic gesture that was echoed in 2004 by the adoption of the Montréal Declaration for Cultural Diversity and Inclusion.
- Creation of the Conseil interculturel de Montréal (Montréal Intercultural Board) in 2002.
- Adoption of the Respect for Individuals Policy in 2004.
- The entry into force of the Montréal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities in 2006.
- Designation of August 23 as “International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition” in 2006.
- Submission of the “Thesis on the Governmental Draft Policy against Racism and Discrimination” to the National Assembly in 2006.
- Participation in the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination and the International Coalition of Cities against Racism, under the aegis of UNESCO.
