An action plan for sustainable solutions
There are a number of important housing-related issues in Montréal, including responding to the needs of households that are at risk or that have poor lodging, ensuring social diversity by offering affordable housing, encouraging families to choose Montréal as their place to live, improving sanitation in rental buildings and revitalizing disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
To meet these challenges, Montréal has adopted the Opération 15 000 logements action plan for the period 2006-2009. The city intends to subsidize the creation of 5,000 social and community housing units as well as 10,000 interventions involving the private residential stock.
"The purpose of our plan is to meet the housing needs of Montrealers, particularly people with low or moderate incomes, families, people living alone and households with special needs," said Mr. Cosmo Maciocia, member of the city’s executive committee responsible for housing.
It is estimated that over the four-year period some $480 million of financial aid with contributions from the city, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM) and the governments of Canada and Québec, will be awarded under the city's various housing programs. The Ville de Montréal will provide $100 million of the total amount. The economic and tax benefits of the Opération 15 000 logements are considerable: total investments of $1.5 billion and housing projects with a real estate value of some $1 billion. |
