Filing a claim with the Ville de Montréal

A number of situations may result in claims filed with the Ville de Montréal.

The Cities and Towns Act sets out the general rules for filing a claim. However, the Charter of Ville de Montréal also contains specific rules of which you should be aware.

Material damages

Consult the information sheet DOMMAGES MATÉRIELS (in French)

  • A 15-day notice is required

The Ville de Montréal must receive a written notice within 15 days following the incident.

  • Prescription: six months

Legal action may be undertaken no later than six months from the date of the incident.

Bodily injuries

Consult the information sheet DOMMAGES CORPORELS (in French)

  • Advance notice

Although not mandatory, advance notice is advisable.

  • Prescription: three years

Legal action may be undertaken no later than three years from the date of the incident.
