Recognition of excellence
The Grand Prix du livre de Montréal promotes excellence in creative
writing and vitality in the Montréal publishing community. It raises the
population's awareness of Québec literature by featuring a recently
published work whose workmanship and originality are exceptional.
Since the Ville de Montréal re-launched it in the fall of 1987, the
Grand Prix du livre de Montréal has quickly become one of Québec
literature's highest distinctions, as it actively contributes to the
publication of a book.
In addition to the $15,000 award the Ville de Montréal presents to the
author, the Grand Prix du livre de Montréal also ensures that the
award-winning work receives significant promotional support.
Since 2009, thanks to a partnership with the Association internationale
des études québécoises, the recipient of GPLM is given the opportunity to
do a promotional tour in one of the 80 countries where the AIEQ has
members.
A coveted award, the Grand Prix du livre de Montréal continues to
honour important works in Québec publishing.
2011 panel of judges
Chaired by poet and novelist Nicole Brossard, the panel of
judges includes:
Laurent Borrego, bookseller Denise
Desaultels, writer Stanley Péan, writer and
editor-in-chief at Le Libraire magazine Tristan
Malavoy-Racine, writer and editor-in-chief at VOIR
newspaper Sherry Simon, essayist and professor in the French
Department at Concordia University.
Composition and operation of the panel of judges
The panel of judges is made up of five members – none of whom belong to
Montréal's public service – selected by the Direction de la culture et du
patrimoine. A third of the panel is renewed from one year to the next and
members can sit on the panel no more than three years in a row nor more than
five times over a ten-year period.
The panel of judges represents the various sectors of the publishing
industry, the two main linguistic communities and Montréal's contemporary
literary and intellectual trends; all members agree not to sit on any
publishers' board of directors or trustees, or reading or editorial
committee.
The panel of judges meets at the members' convenience, and is chaired by a
cultural community figure who is appointed to the role for 3 years by the city
and not entitled to vote.
The awarding process occurs in three stages: the pre-selection, the
short-listing of five finalists, and the selection of the award-winning work.
Each work entered in the competition is read by at least two of the panel's five
judges, who then evaluate the work. Each short-listed work is read and evaluated
by all members of the panel of judges.
Nature of the award
