Libraries
The heart of a cultural metropolis
Canada's public libraries have been successful and highly esteemed providers of direct services for more than 150 years. They began - and remain - as our society's informal education system. They have been adding new roles as economic incubators, community development agents, distributors of electronic information, and centres for lifelong learning to their traditional direct service portfolio.

Libraries are doorways to knowledge, understanding and imagination. They help us to share, discover, understand the world and broaden our horizons. They are a fundamental part of promoting cultural growth.
As strongholds of culture, community and identity, libraries offer knowledge and know-how in an informal and flexible way that can be adapted to the needs of each individual. For many people, the library is a gateway, the first place they encounter culture in its many forms.
There are 44 public libraries across Montréal. Residents can join any of the libraries free of charge to enjoy library programs, services, collections and activities.
