Tax on the Registration of Passenger Vehicles
(TRPV) |
Owners of passenger vehicles registered
with the SAAQ at an urban agglomeration of Montréal address must pay
this tax.
The TRPV is effected since
July 1, 2011 and costs $45 for 12 months. The tax is charged when
you renew registration, register a vehicle or license of a stored
vehicle . TRPV revenues will provide funding to the Société de
transport de Montréal
(STM). | |
It is a motor vehicle other than a
motorcycle, moped or minibus, owned by an individual, used primarily
for personal purposes and designed to carry up to nine people at a
time, for which no permit from the Commission des transports du
Québec is required. | |
The $45 TRPV is included in the public
transit contribution. The $30 difference is the usual contribution
and will be paid to the
AMT. | |
The Montréal Agglomeration Council can
only levy a tax on the territory under its jurisdiction: the Island
of Montréal. | |
Owners who received registration
renewal notices prior to July 1, 2011, will not be
charged. | |
No refund is owed the owner of a
passenger vehicle due to a change of
address. | |
If a passenger vehicle is temporarily
stored, discarded, stolen or destroyed by fire or
reported total loss following an accident, the person in whose name
the registration is made of a passenger vehicle may claim a refund
of a portion of the tax in the cases and conditions provided in the
Highway Safety Code.
No refund applies for a change of
address. | |
