Tax on the Registration of Passenger Vehicles (TRPV)

The Tax on the Registration of Passenger Vehicles (TRPV) became effective on July 1, 2011. TRPV revenues provide funding to the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

The TRPV, which will cost $45 for the 12-month period following renewal, is charged to owners of passenger vehicles registered on the Island of Montréal.

A “passenger vehicle” is a motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, moped or minibus, owned by an individual, used primarily for personal purposes and designed to carry up to nine persons at a time, for which no permit from the Commission des transports du Québec is required.

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) collects this tax at the time of registration renewal, registering a vehicle or licensing of a stored vehicle.
