Montréal residents pay two types of
municipal taxes:
1. Local taxes, for funding expenditures
controlled by the City Council and the Urban Agglomeration Council.
2.
Borough taxes, for improving borough services and for paying loans taken out by
the borough.
Montréal is responsible for providing urban
agglomeration services to all island residents and for administering urban
agglomeration facilities. Key services include water distribution and
purification, public safety, the Municipal Court, economic promotion and
development, tax assessment, waste management, administration of municipal
waterways, social housing and public transit.
Urban agglomeration services have been
funded since January 1, 2009 through quota shares paid by each of the island's
16 related municipalities (Act to amend various legislative provisions
concerning municipal affairs).
