Library statistics for the 21st century world
The conference is organized by Montreal
Public Libraries System and Concordia University Libraries System and sponsored
by IFLA Section on Statistics and Evaluation. It concerns a new model of global library statistics
based on international standards as
ISO 2789. It is a result of a joint initiative of
IFLA, UIS (UNESCO Institute of statistics) and ISO.
Call for papers
The conference will
• Present the results of a pilot UNESCO survey for a new standard of global
library statistics for academic and public
libraries
• Review recent developments in
statistics, performance measurement and
benchmarking
• Provide examples of
co-operative and international initiatives
The conference aims at all library and information
professionals concerned with library management and evaluation of information
services.
The Conference Board will accept contributions
illustrating how groups of libraries may find consensus on using the same set of
statistics or performance indicators for benchmarking purposes on a regular
basis. Papers should show results, problems and success of such projects.
Proposals for papers should be in English and include an
abstract of no longer than 500 words and biographical details of the author. The
full text should be in English or have an English translation attached and no
more than 3000 words in length.

Decision on acceptance of proposals will be made by end
of March 2008. Papers accepted will be due no later than July 15th 2008.
Please note that all expenses, including registration for
the conference, travel, accommodation etc., are the responsibility of the
authors of the accepted papers.
Program
Presentation of the results of the new UNESCO’s survey on statistics in academic and public libraries. It is based on new model of basic statistical indicators (Global Statistics), according to recognized international standards as ISO 2789. First phase of the project concerning University and Public Libraries of Latin America and Carabeans, will be presented by Research group, composed by specialists of UNESCO and IFLA and also students supported by teachers of School of Library and Information Science of University of Montreal and Graduate School in Librarianship of McGill University.
Parallel sessions are provided to introduce recent developments in statistics, performance measurement and benchmarking in public and academic libraries in different countries
Plenary session will conclude on modifications and improve more appropriate orientations for next phases of the UNESCO’s statistical survey for other countries.
Other activities
Special Evening, August 18, including Dinner and Concert by Montrealer musicians will be held at Mont-Royal Mountain Cottage and Belvedere.

Registration rates: 300 CAN $, including lunches, special dinner and cultural evening. Electronic registration form will be available later on Montreal Public library website.
Accomodation rates: 90-130 CAN $ per night. Hotels in proximity of Concordia University will be reserved for the event. The Hotel booking form will be available later on Montreal Public library website.
