Montréal, World Book Capital 2005-2006
In the footsteps of Madrid, Alexandria, New Delhi and Antwerp, Montréal was designated World Book Capital from April 23, 2005, World Book and Copyright Day, to April 23, 2006. UNESCO, the United Nations organization dedicated to culture, science and education, created this initiative in 2001 with a view to encouraging reading and publishing. It was with pride that Montréal received this distinction. In 2006, Montréal passed the flame to the city of Turin.
Not only did associating with partners in the milieu of books and reading lead to the achievement of offering many activities during this year of literary festivities, but it also provided an opportunity to create permanent ties between the various players dedicated to promoting the pleasure of reading and the need to learn.
The Montréal Public Libraries Network played a pivotal role in the success of Montréal, World Book Capital.
