The Bureau du taxi et du remorquage opened in 1986, when the Québec government decided to decentralize responsibility for running the taxi industry.
The taxi and towing office opened officially on November 30, 1987. Its mandate was to create ties with the taxi industry, which led to the creation of a standing committee with representatives of the taxi business and a by-law reflecting the needs of the industry.
Since 1995, the taxi and towing office has been an agent for the Société d'assurance automobile (SAAQ), and provides full service to all drivers and taxi owners. This service, also available to citizens, brings additional income to the taxi and towing office.
Since 2003, the taxi office has been in charge of certain aspects of Montréal's towing industry.
