The results of the 33nd edition of the photo contest
Montreal, Cultural Metropolis
Montreal, cultural metropolis: this theme provoked not only a slew of
questions, but also a stunning response from the contestants. To them, Montreal
breathes culture! The city's concert halls and theatres, public squares, the
Botanical Garden, and Place des Festivals are all cultural, but so are its
character and its urban life in all its diversity.
Viewpoints of Montreal, Cultural Metropolis
An exhibition by the Centre d'histoire de Montréal
Hall d'honneur of
Montreal City Hall
From March 1 to 15, 2012
The public is invited to visit the exhibition honouring the top 15 jury
choices, as well as the three prize-winning photographs, presented in the Hall
d'honneur of Montreal City Hall.
And the winners are:
1st Prize - City of Montreal
Soir de spectacle… et de pluie à la
PdA by Lucie Poulin
Black silhouettes stand out in the
foreground of this surrealistic photograph of the new light screens at Place des
Arts. Here, art can be seen taking root in a city in movement, engaging
passersby as they go about their business.
The jury hails the photographer's talent in creating an aesthetically
coherent image from moving elements and for eloquently expressing the
relationship being fostered between Montrealers and a progressively more
accessible cultural life.
In addition, the symmetrical composition and colour contrasts are
striking.
Captivating and current!
2nd Prize - Photoservice
Place de l'homme by Tristan
Breeuwer
In this photograph, Alexander Calder's Man
becomes a character in a horror movie with a Gothic atmosphere -- the tension is
palpable! Who will emerge from behind the set?
The photograph of this public monument, a silent witness of Expo 67, could
not better express both the multi-faceted formal beauty of the artwork and the
mysterious, romantic aura of the islands facing the city.
The carefully-framed viewpoint and the delicate harmony of the greys,
enhanced by the mist, reveal a fantastical aspect of this emblematic
sculpture.
Bravo!
3rd Prize
Satosphère by André Jodoin
This photograph shows us Luc Courchesne's
interactive work, Salon de massage McLuhan, projected in the Satosphere, the new
dome theatre of the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT).
With our very first glance, this futuristic environment takes us into another
dimension, the shapes and words sucking us in like a black hole in space.
The photographer has succeeded in capturing a moment in the moving
presentation by giving it an autonomous visual coherence. He was also able to
convey the impact of the immersive nature of the experience, but without
excluding the human beings in charge of the technology.
Spectacular!

"Montreal Postcard"
The results of the 32nd edition of the
Montréal à l'œil photo contest
The 32nd edition of the Montréal à l'œil photography competition
came to a close with the choosing of the winners. This special Tourisme Montréal
edition invited contestants to capture the quintessential postcard image that,
in their opinion, best represents the city’s spirit.
In their photographs, the majority of the very numerous contestants (over a
thousand photographs were submitted) chose to give the city the image of a
North-American port, elegant and modern, characterized by the inevitable urban
confusion but conserving a colourful atmosphere of popular bustle and a relaxed
lifestyle. Judging by the submissions, the changing seasons and contrasting
climate add to the city’s magic.
The members of the jury considered relatedness to the theme, composition,
technique, contrast and focus, formal quality, and point of view.
1st prize
Mathias
Berthet, for his photograph entitled The Institution. Mathias
was awarded a photography contract with Tourisme Montreal, worth $2000.
His photograph associates an everyday scene with particularly colourful
elements of an urban setting that allows both Montrealers and
tourists to instantly identify the city.
2nd prize
Patrick
Palmer, for his photograph entitled Biosphere. Patrick was
awarded a gift certificate for $1000 at Photoservice, a Montréal à l’oeil
partner since 1991.
In contrast to the first-prize winner, this photograph offers an
unconventional, impressionistic view of the Biosphere on Île Sainte-Hélène, one
of the icons of the modern city.
3rd prize
Rodrigo
Moreira, for his photograph entitled View of Mount Royal.
Rodrigo was awarded a Forfait Passion worth $500. by Tourisme Montréal.
His postcard view is a classic downtown cityscape seen from the top of Mount
Royal. Framed by sumac foliage, this appealing image evokes both the heavy
tropical atmosphere of Montreal summers and the city’s essential North-American
character.
Honourable mention
The Centre d'histoire de Montréal and
Tourisme Montréal wanted to underline the artistic qualities of the photograph
entitled Farines Five Roses by Carlos Viani (although he was not named a
winner).

In the coming months, the Centre d'histoire de Montréal and its partners
will be exhibiting a selection of several of the photographs submitted in the
contest.
Our warm thanks to all our contestants and sponsors!

Old Port’s grain silos are perfect examples of the enormous potential of this
subject. It’s up to you to explore the vast industrial heritage that, since
1850, has made Montréal the economic capital of the province and indeed of all
of Canada.
