The Montréal à l'œil photography competition 31th edition
The 31thedition of the Montréal à l'oeil photography
competition on the theme of Montréal Moderne (1930-1978) came to an end this
week, with the members of the jury chosing the winners. Their evaluation of the
photographs was based on adherence to the theme, composition, technique,
contrast, and focus quality, as well as aesthetic aspects and
viewpoint.

Le toit du monde. Hugues Rochette,
2009.
The 1stprize of $ 1000.-worth of products
sold at Photoservice (offered by Photoservice) was awarded to Mr. Hugues
Rochette for the compositional and technical quality, in wich the play of space,
punctuated by mettalic cords and a bird that orients our gaze, creates a
spectacular landscape.

Milles-feuilles lumineux. Yannick André-Genel,
2009.
The second prize of $ 750 worth of products sold at
Photoservice (offered by the Centre d'histoire de Montréal) was awarded to Mr.
Yannick André-Genel, for the interesting play of light underlined by the
repetitive cadence of the balconies, and the contrast between the formal purity
of the building and the organic forms of the vegetation.

Stade olympique. Lino Cipresso, 2009.
The third prize of $ 500., offered by the galerie d'art
Nicolin & Gublin, was won by Mr. Lino Cipresso, for his choice of an
intriguing detail that brings out the texture of the concrete, and the
impressive play of volumes that modern architecture places to
advantage.

president of Docomomo Québec), Isabelle Jacques (coordinator, Photoservice),
Stéphanie Mondor (in charge of collections, Centre d'histoire de Montréal) and

Modernist Montreal
June 1st to November 15, 2009
Are you a photographer with Montréal in your sights? Once a year,
the CHM invites you to participate in the photography contest "Montréal à
l'œil." Selected photographs from among those submitted are exhibited at
the CHM.

Since the
beginning of the 20th century, Montreal has built up an astonishing modern
heritage legacy in the futuristic architecture that stands out in our eclectic
urban hodgepodge. Pioneering structures such as Place Ville Marie, Westmount
Square, and Habitat 67 remain important cultural references at the heart of our
city's daily activities. The office towers, religious monuments, schools,
caisses populaires, and single family dwellings built between 1930 and 1970 are
concrete manifestations of the dreams, transformations, and innovations that
have shaped cotemporary Quebec society.

The Industrial Montréal contest offers a fabulous landscape of possibilities
for all who love to take photographs. In your sights: anything and everything
related to industry on the island of Montréal. The east-end refineries and the
Old Port’s grain silos are perfect examples of the enormous potential of this
subject. It’s up to you to explore the vast industrial heritage that, since
1850, has made Montréal the economic capital of the province and indeed of all
of Canada.
"Montréal à l’œil," 29th edition
The "Montréal à l’œil"
photography contest is now in its 29th edition. Inaugurated by the Centre
d’histoire de Montréal in 1993 and open to both amateurs and professionals, the
contest aims to discover and uncover the heritage of daily life in Montréal.
Many themes have been presented over the years: public clocks, stairways,
alleyways, neighbourhood businesses and sheds, to name just a few. Since its
inception, the contest has judged over ten thousand photographs taken by
over one thousand participants.
