An Award of Outstanding Achievement for the Centre d'histoire de
Montréal
On April, 13, at the Canadian Museums Association conference at the
Hilton Hotel in London, Ontario, the Centre d’histoire de Montréal received a
2011 Award of Outstanding Achievement for its project, “You’re Part of
History!”.
The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) has honoured the Centre d’histoire de
Montréal for its “You’re Part of History!” project, praising it as an action on
a national scale that went beyond expected results.
The CMA Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes exceptional museum projects
in several fields. In the educational category, the award recognizes educational
programming that advances knowledge and understanding and which reaches new
audiences or enhances new ones through innovative actions.
Begun in 2006 by the Centre d’histoire de Montréal, the educational
program “You’re Part of History!” is used in high-school French-language classes
for children of new immigrants at the time of their first contact, not only with
French, but with the history of their host city and society. The activities of
this program bring new knowledge of Montreal’s history, cause pupils to reflect
upon their family heritage, and affirm the value of their own life stories. In
2010, 20 classes took part in the “You’re Part of History!” project for a period
of approximately two months.
This project was made possible by an agreement between the City of Montreal
and the Ministère de l’Immigration et Communautés culturelles du Québec.
The project’s results in 2010 are available online at: http://www.museedelapersonne.ca/VFPH-2010/
Ciné-labyrinth 2: 4050 visitors at the Centre d'histoire de Montréal!
As part of the Montreal HighLights Festival's All-Nighter, the Centre
d'histoire de Montréal's "Ciné-labyrinthe 2" attracted a record-setting 4050
people between 8 PM and 2 AM. Thanks go out to all the night owls who got to
view local, vintage home movies supllied by les Productions de la Ruelle.

The Centre d'histoire celebrated its 25th anniversary!
November 25, 2008, was the 25th anniversary of the Centre
d'histoire de Montréal. The crowd of 200 people present at the celebration party
included Gérald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, and representatives of the many
organizations, as well as the public and private partners who have collaborated
with the institution over the years.
On this occasion, the Mayor officially announced a grant of over 3 million
dollars from the City of Montreal and the Ministère de la culture, des
communications et de la condition féminine (Quebec), which will be used to carry
out necessary structural and restoration work on the heritage building that has
housed the Centre since 1983. Thus, the former fire station, dating from 1903,
will undergo a major facelift.
The Centre d'histoire will be reopened to groups, by reservation, on March
16, 2009, and to the general public on May 31, Montreal Museums Day. Outdoor
activities will be offered in March and April, and June will see the opening of
a brand new temporary exhibition on the tumultuous life of surgeon Norman
Bethune, a Montrealer by adoption who became a hero in China during the Japanese
invasion of that country in the 1930s.
The administrative offices of the Centre d'histoire will remain open during
the repair work so that its team can prepare a number of projects for 2009 and
2010.

The Centre d'histoire de Montréal also has several yearly activities, such as
the Montréal Museums Day, the History Festival, Culture Days, the All-Nighter
and the Opération Patrimoine Architectural de Montréal.
Check back regularly for more details about these events as they take
place.
