 | EDUCATIONAL VISITS TO THE CENTRE D'HISTOIRE DE MONTREAL
A Living History!
Our mission at the Centre d'histoire de Montréal is to help understand the
city as it is today through its history, its heritage and the material and
cultural traces that are still visible around us now. We offer a uniquely
inclusive vision of all of Montréal's history from 1535 until today.
The Centre d'histoire has created educational visits tailored to the
needs, interests and development of sudents at different levels, based on the
Québec Education Program developed by the ministère de l'Éducation du Québec. A
variety of means are used to arouse the students' interest and curiosity and
offer them an enriching experience outside of their school context.

The students meet Outoutagan, Roxane the whale, Henri-Ucal,
Jeannette and her dog Icicle. Following their
adventures, children learn about the different means of
transportation that were used in Montréal at different times.
The children's curiosity is aroused by a huge picture-book, especially
illustrated for them. Their guide uses this book in each exhibition room
to tell stories about children and means of
transportation. There also are games and drawings to do in their

Living in Montreal…
Permanent exhibition Maximum 2 classes
The permanent exhibition introduces students to Montreal's
history from the Iroquoian presence around 1535 until today.
Through stories featuring 9-to-15-year-old children,
the students become aware of changes in how society and territory have
been organized in Montreal.
For the 2nd cycle classes, the Iroquoian presence is
brought to life by means of Amerindian objects, while the history of the
French régime is told through the authentic account of
Françoise Godé, a nine-year-old young girl who was present when Montréal
was founded in 1642. For the 3rd cycle classes, the Iroquoian presence is
dealt with briefly so that there is more focus on the twentieth
century.
Seeing Montréal through children's eyes, across the centuries: a rich
and moving experience.

Montréal 5 Times, 5 Themes
Permanent exhibition Maximum 2 classes
Just as historians do, the students
must ask themselves questions and investigate a
theme in Montréal's history, leading them to the writing of an article.
The five themes are work, housing, public services, prominent
personalities and key events.
At the Centre d'histoire, a guide will sketch out for them a portrait
of Montréal at five specific historical times. The guide will also help
students pursue their enquiries at the museum, encouraging them to use the
exhibition's objects, images and texts to explore the
five key times in Montréal history, from 1535 until today. Students
are part of the action at the museum and become veritable history
detectives!
