The City Life and Montréal's Commission des services électrique, 1914-1933

Exhibition in the hall of honor of the Montréal City Hall
January 12, to February 15, 2006

Owing to the succes of this exhibition last year, the Centre d'histoire de Montréal invites you to discover the city during the Roaring Twenties through original photographs exhibited in the hall of honor of the Montréal City Hall .

Exhibited Here for the First Time

The photographs that make up Wired offer wonderful candid shots of Montréal life between 1914 and 1933. Created for Montréal's Commission des services électriques, this piece of our photographic heritage will be displayed for the very first time in an exhibition prepared by the Centre d'histoire de Montréal and the Section des archives de la Direction du Greffe de la Ville de Montréal.

Montréal's Commission des services électriques

The Commission des services électriques has been overseeing the burial of Montréal's electrical wiring for close to one hundred years. In order to document this operation, the Commission asked professional photographers to produce a series of images showing the streets before, during and after roadwork. The main goal of these technical photographs is neither aesthetic nor artistic; they are meant as documentation. What interested the Commission was poles and wires! And yet, thanks to a thousand and one details, we are treated to unexpected glimpses of daily life in Montréal.

Enjoy your tour...

The exhibition Wired invites you to tour four thematic areas: Montreal 's Commission des services électriques, Montrealers, City Life and Signs.

This exhibition, mounted by the Centre d'histoire de Montréal and the Section des archives de la Direction du Greffe de la Ville de Montréal, together with the Commission des services électriques de la Ville de Montréal, received financial support from Bell Canada, Hydro-Québec and Vidéotron.
