Batteries: Hazardous household waste

Used batteries in many appliances and types of equipment are considered to be hazardous household waste (HHW) because they contain heavy metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, zinc, nickel) that may contaminate the soil and the water table. In order to prevent these batteries from winding up in landfill sites, the Borough will be looking after bringing them to the HHW collections . As for cellphones and other types of batteries (rechargeable or cellphone), they are sent to a specialized company as soon as the containers are full.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs

Compact fluorescent light bulbs contain up to 5 mg of mercury, a highly toxic heavy metal that contaminates the soil and the water table and that may result in serious health problems under prolonged exposure.
